Airsoft Team touts game’s realistic rush
By Julie Fiedler
A lone survivor of the zombie apocalypse hides in the woods, clutching his semi-automatic weapon desperately scanning the trees for signs of movement as two words run through his mind: Survive and win. He’s outnumbered as a slew of zombies, fully automatic weapons at the ready, close in on him, their final prey.
It could happen right here at Fort Riley during an outing with the Airsoft Team.
Airsoft, a combat game using replica guns and plastic BBs, pits individuals and sometimes teams against one another. Airsoft is akin to paintball, but team members will tell you with an air of bravado that Airsoft is better in almost every way.
“It’s a lot cheaper, and it’s more fun. It’s more realistic,” said Sgt. Jason Healey, 299th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, who leads the team.
Sporting rivalries aside, the team is passionate about Airsoft.
“When you’re the last guy left in the game and there’s still like three on the other team and you’re laying in grass waiting to figure out where they’re going to come from – that adrenaline rush is the best,” said Spc. Brandon Gabel, 541st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Inf. Div.
The recently revived team meets nearly every weekend, depending on weather, to play out different scenarios like zombie mode and more.
“If you can think it, you can do it … the scenarios are endless,” Healey said.
They often play with the Kansas State University Airsoft Team and sometimes go to larger events.
“Our main mission is to get people together on the weekends and introduce people to the sport – Airsoft – and have fun … As an additional benefit of it, we do larger events where there’s going to be hundreds of people involved,” said 2nd Lt. Andrew Fisher, 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Inf.Div.
