“I’ve tried a number of different pistol mag pouches, and the Tactical Tailor Pistol Mag Pouch is still one of my favorites. Tactical Tailor gear is not just Made in the USA, it’s made in my own backyard, up in Tacoma, Washington. The Tac Tailor pistol mag design incorporates a number of features that combine speed, security, and versatility.
At first glance, these look similar to most double pistol mag pouches. They feature a top flap with velcro closure for maximum security. I have often used them with the flap in place, especially in the field when I’m crawling and more likely to have a magazine snagged in brush or rocks. Unlike other mag pouches where the top flaps merely fold down, these are actually removable. Detaching the velcro tab inside the back of the pouch will remove the top flap. This same velcro section also allows the flaps to be adjusted for height.
The standout feature for these, though, is the kydex retention insert. These inserts provide grip on either single or double-stack magazines, and allow for use as an open-top magazine pouch. I have used this pouch with 1911 .45 magazines, as well as with the double-stack .40 XDM magazines, and the inserts provide enough tension to keep both styles secure when used as an open top pistol mag pouch. I’ve had these pistol mag pouches since 2008, and have left the magazines in them for long periods of storage, and they still provide solid retention. Even with the retention of the kydex inserts, the pouch should only be used in open-top configuration when you plan on generally remaining upright. After all, it’s still possible for you to remove the magazines, and if you slide downwards against the mag pouch, it’s not impossible for a stick or rock to grab a mag and pull it out.
Tactical Tailor designs their pouches to be mounted with MALICE clips. These are extremely rugged, and lock in place for a stable and secure mount on PALS webbing. In addition to being Made in the USA, Tactical Tailor pouches carry a lifetime warranty. Despite having muddied these repeatedly, crawling on rocky terrain (and knocking out magazines because I was using them without the flap when I shouldn’t have been), these look as new as the day I got them. The construction quality is fantastic, and they remain my go-to magazine pouch for wear either on a battle belt or MOLLE vest.”
